If you're new to the game you may have noticed sometimes you end up wearing really strange outfits. Changing out various pieces at different times as you get stronger armour means your clothes look totally mismatched. On top of that, some of the indivudual items are a downright eyesore.

In order to look the part of a daring adventurer, you'll want to learn to use glamours. Here's how.

Unlocking Glamour

To unlock the glamour system, players must complete the level 15 quest 'If I Had a Glamour' in Western Thanalan. This will also unlock the Glamour Dresser in your Inn Room and your Squadron Barracks.

Glamouring Items

Glamouring means applying one item's appearance onto another item of the same type (Body, Hands, Legs, etc.)

There are three restrictions:

1 – "Glamours may not be stacked". The glamour piece must not be glamoured as something else.

2 – "Unable to cast glamour due to class restriction". The glamour piece must be equippable by your job and level.

3 – "Base item level cannot be lower than that of the glamour cast". The glamour piece must be the same or lower item level than the equipment you're casting it on.

There are two methods to glamouring and both require at least one Glamour Prism. You can use a Glamour Prism directly with a piece in your inventory, or you can place a piece into your Glamour Dresser for the cost of one Glamour Prism.

Using a Glamour Prism Directly

You can spend a Glamour Prism to make a piece of equipment look like another (prettier) piece of equipment. Right click the hideous item you're trying to cover up and select 'Cast Glamour'. Then you can select a piece of the same type in your inventory. Items that break the rules above will be greyed out.

This method lets you apply a glamour immediately regardless of your location, as long as you have the glamour piece and a glamour prism in your inventory. Some people prefer this while they're doing duties or levelling up, so they can reapply their glamour to their new equipment without heading back to a city.

Using the Glamour Dresser

You can put a piece of equipment in your Glamour Dresser at an Inn Room or in your Squadron Barracks. Doing so costs one Glamour Prism, but you can then apply it to as many items and as many times as you want, as long as you're in an area with access to Glamour Plates.w

The item you're putting in the Glamour Dresser must be full durability and it will lose any crafter signature, materia, other glamour, and (most) aetherial bonuses. It also resets the spiritbond to 0%, and when you remove the piece from the dresser it will be bound to you.

You can dye an item in your Glamour Dresser (right click > 'Dye') or dye it on an individual Glamour Plate for just that outfit. If it's an expensive dye, I recommend dying the item in the Glamour Dresser. If it's cheap you can safely dye it on the Glamour Plate and not worry about removing that Glamour Plate later.

If you ever want to cast glamours from your Glamour Dresser without setting up a Glamour Plate, simply go to the Glamour Dresser, right click > 'Apply Glamour' and it will cast that glamour on your currently equipped piece of equipment for free. No Glamour Prism required.

You can remove an item at any time by right clicking > 'Restore Item' from the Glamour Dresser. You can even remove pieces that are currently being used in Glamour Plates.

Using Glamour Plates

To set up a Glamour Plate, simply assign whichever pieces from your Glamour Dresser and/or Armoire you like to the Plate. Glamour Plates can be applied in the main 'hubs' of each expansion: Limsa Lominsa, Ul'dah, Gridania, Foundation, Idyllshire, Kugane, Rhalgr's Reach, The Crystarium, and Eulmore. The residential districts allow for the use of Glamour Plates as well.

Glamour Plates can also be linked to Gear Sets. From the Gear Set List, right click > 'Link to Glamour Plate' and that Glamour Plate will be applied automatically when switching to that Gear Set.

You can also do this with macros using the command /gearset or /gs. For example, "/gs change 1 3" will equip you with your 1st Gear Set and then apply your 3rd Glamour Plate.

Common Sources of Glamour

This will come down to personal preference depending on what you're looking for. The xivstyle archive is a good resource to browse a lot of armour models on Hyur characters. If you want to try them on in game on your own character, below are a few places you can get started to find cool outfits.

The Marketboard

The easiest way to get something shiny immediately is just to pay for it. Check a Marketboard and sort by job and equipment slot to easily browse through tons of gear to see what you might like. Remember that you don't need to buy High Quality equipment if you're just using it for the appearance.

A lot of the items on the Marketboard are sold by NPC vendors throughout the world, so check for a Shop Selling Price tag on the item in case the prices on the Marketboard seem too steep.

'Artifact' or 'Job' Gear

If you're looking to really capture the fantasy of a particular job, check out its job-specific gear since it's designed for that exact purpose. If you've thrown it away you can reobtain it for a small amount of gil from Calamity Salvagers in the starting cities. You can find the level 50 and 70 sets here.

Some of the job sets are reobtained elsewhere. You can get the second level 50 set from Kakalan in Revenant's Toll [22, 5] for antique items obtained from level 50 dungeons. Yolaine in Foundation [13, 11] sells the level 60 sets for Centurio Seals.

The level 80 set can be obtained (and reobtained) from Grenoldt in The Tempest [34, 26]. All of these sets have a dyeable version, but the level 80 dyeable version is not obtainable yet.

The Gold Saucer

The Gold Saucer has a few outfits that you might want to check out. Go to the Gold Saucer Attendant <Prize Claim> at [5.1, 6.7] for most of them. These are all general outfits, equippable by all classes. Some of them are ridiculous, so if you like for people to just stop and stare at you, you'll want to have a look. You'll need to earn a decent amount of MGP to buy all these.

Kasumi <Boutique Vendor> [7.2, 7.3] has another outfit for some gil, assuming you've done enough of the Fashion Report.

Trial & Raid Gear

These sets of equipment are designed to make you look and feel like a total boss as a reward for completing difficult endgame content. Extreme trials will reward you with fancy weapons, while the raid tiers have full sets of armor and weapons available.

The armor sets from normal and savage modes are the same model, but the savage equipment pieces are dyeable. You'll have to collect tokens to trade for the gear by running the fights multiple times, unless you get lucky and your item of choice happens to drop.

If you have a max level character you can probably solo the level 50 and 60 trials, but you may have to advertise an unsynced run in Party Finder for the higher level trials and raids. These are fights that can appear in your Wondrous Tails book, so people do have some extra incentive to join you.

You can try on most of this stuff from vendors, so check them out in Idyllshire (level 60), Rhalgr's Reach (level 70), and Eulmore (level 80). The level 50 stuff is a special case since it's actually crafted from drops, so you can try them on from the Marketboard.

Tomestone Gear

While not always as impressive as the armor sets from raids, Tomestone sets are released at the same time as an alternative for endgame players, so they still have some care put into their aesthetics. I've found I actually prefer the look of some of these sets, and they're a little easier to get, too.

If you're looking for one of these outfits that's not at the current level cap, you'll need to collect Tomestones of Poetics and then buy them from Mor Dhona (level 50), Idyllshire (level 60), Rhalgr's Reach (level 70). Check out this article on the best ways to farm these tomestones.

Eulmore is where you'll find the level 80 sets, but these are obtained for either Nuts or one of the two endgame tomestones, depending on which set you're looking at.

PvP Gear

While I find some of these sets to be utterly bizarre, there are some unique aesthetics here if that's what you're going for. Check out the Wolves' Den Pier for all these outfits and collect Wolf Marks if you want to grab any of these items.

Dungeon Loot

I recommend looking up the desired equipment on something like garlandtools. First I should note than many dungeon drops are undyeable, so be sure to check first if you think that's important to you.

Second, check for any shared models, since Square Enix tends to re-use equipment models from past expansions. You may be able to grab a similar piece immediately from the marketboard or another easy method, though its colour scheme could be slightly different.

This is the hardest type of glamour to obtain because it comes down to RNG whether or not the piece you want even drops. Consider asking friends to help you farm, or if it's an older dungeon, come back when you're much higher level so you can solo it easily.

If you're after gear from a levelling dungeon (e.g. level 51-59, 61-69, etc.) then be sure to keep other pieces from the same set in your inventory because because finishing the dungeon guarantees a piece from your current job's set that you don't already have.

The Mog Station

If you don't mind paying real money, The game's cash shop has exclusive cosmetic items including glamour items. They're found under the 'Optional Items' tab of The Mog Station. Personally I find enough stylish attire in-game since there are so many items, but I do see the appeal of some of the specially designed sets you can purchase.

Summary

In short, to look the part of the hero you'll want to stock up on Glamour Prisms, hunt down some nice looking garments, and fill your Glamour Dresser. Then you can have a blast putting together whatever cool or crazy outfits you can think of.
